Overview

The presentation was better than last year, but there's definitely room for improvement as you'll notice further down. Unlike last year, none of these stats are surprising.

Top Genres

Literally the exact same as last year and probably the rest of my life.

1. Pop - I am a pop girl 4L.

2. Hip-Hop - Where would I be without hip-hop? Who would I be without hip-hop?

3. Alternative - I'm a teenage girl in crisis. Of course, I like alternative music.

4. R&B & Soul - SZA & Daniel Caesar are really carrying this genre's plays on their backs.

5. Soundtrack - I also love movies!

Top Songs

Biggest Shock: "Angel Baby"

I listened to a LOT of new music this year. Almost all of my top songs of 2022 have been new discoveries. Here are my top 10.

10. "WISH I HAD YOU" by Ruel

If y'all didn't know I was a Ruel stan, you will by the end of this.

RCA

9. "JAPANESE WHISKEY" by Ruel

My favourite track off of one of my favourite albums of the year. The fact I still haven't heard Ruel sing it live is RIDICULOUS.

RCA

8. "Chanel" by Frank Ocean

On repeat at home, work and on commutes. I've listened to "Chanel" so many times over the years, but I never really heard it until now.

Blonded

7. "Saving All My Love" by Omar Apollo

You CANNOT tell me that Frank had no part in the making of this song. It has Blonde laced through its entirety, from production to vocals to lyrics.

Warner

6. "Blind" by SZA

Self explanatory. I mean, you heard it, right?

Top Dawg/RCA

5. "Brakelights" by Omar Apollo

"My car is a little like you. It's not working right now." I've never been more obsessed with an opening line. Immediately clocking someone for being jobless in the first 30 seconds? It doesn't really get more iconic than that.

Omar Apollo

4. "everytime" by Ariana Grande

It's the fan favourite for a reason. I didn't want this to be my favourite Ari song because I hate being basic, but I can't argue with the stats. "everytime" is a HIT.

Republic

3. "Kamikaze" by Omar Apollo

How was I living before this song? "Think of you and you and me 'cause I'm an addict," has me in a permanent chokehold.

Warner

2. "Nobody Gets Me" by SZA

It's crazy that "Drew Barrymore" was second last year because "Nobody Gets Me" is basically "Drew Barrymore 2".

Top Dawg Entertainment / RCA

1. "Useless" by Omar Apollo

One of my favourite Omar songs and just songs in general. Playing it through my headphones isn't enough. I need it in my bloodstream.

Warner

Top Albums

Basically the same last year, but revamped!

10. Apolonio by Omar Apollo

Apolonio is SUCH an underrated project! I'm also obsessed with the cover art.

Warner

9. CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: THE ESTATE SALE by Tyler, The Creator

Several years late, but thank you Dash for making me come to my senses. I've always respected Tyler as an artist, but I get it now.

Columbia

7. Heroes & Villains (Heroes Version) by Metro Boomin

Still using the instrumental tracks as study music.

7. Guts by Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia is a hitmaker. Guts is even better than Sour, and I really liked Sour. I CANNOT wait until she comes to Toronto in April.

Geffen

6. NEVER ENOUGH by Daniel Caesar

Well, the apology tour was underwhelming, but it was good enough for me! I wasn't sure how NEVER ENOUGH would compare to Freudian, but the new album was SO much better.

Republic

5. Renaissance by Beyoncé

This is what longevity sounds like. Renaissance will always, ALWAYS, be famous.

Parkwood Entertainment / Columbia

4. The Batman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Michael Giacchino

Still obsessed with this score. I listened to it while I wrote all my finals listening to it.

3. Ivory by Omar Apollo

I don't know how I was living before this album. There is no way I would've been able to survive the second semester and the all-nighters without it.

Columbia

2. 4TH WALL by Ruel

I don't even have the words. Ruel outdid himself. 4TH WALL is pop excellence! Zero skips, but infinite replays. The concert was definitely one of my favourites this year. Hearing "MUST BE NICE" live was surreal.

RCA

1. SOS by SZA

Miss Solana Rowe can do no wrong. This album is perfection.

Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA

Top Artists

The same, but different.

10. Daniel Caesar

I'm not sure if Daniel Caesar has ever been in my top artists before, but between the new album and concert prep, I'm not surprised.

Apple Music

9. Jonas Brothers

Decades late, but I'm here now.

Apple Music

8. Tobi Lou

I'm so sad "Favourite Substitute" didn't make it into my top songs this year because it's SO GOOD. Meeting Tobi before the concert healed my middle school self.

Apple Music

7. Dominic Fike

After Sunburn, I can confirm that Dominic Fike is a permanent fave.

6. SZA

I'm honestly surprised she's not higher up in the ranking.

Apple Music

5. Ariana Grande

One thing about Miss Ponytail: she's gonna stay in my top 5. I saw she was back in the stu recently so hopefully, we get AG7 soon.

Apple Music

4. Taylor Swift

Blondie may have slipped a bit, but I don't see her leaving the top 5 anytime soon. Especially with Reputation (Taylor's Version) on the way.

Apple Music

3. Metro Boomin

Metro came out with several great projects in the last year or so. HEROES & VILLAINS and SAVAGE MODE II got a lot of plays. I also listened to the NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES instrumental tracks while doing homework.

2. Beyoncé

Since releasing Lemonade, Beyoncé has been a constant in my rotation, but I knew after hearing Renaissance she would end up top three this year.

Parkwood Entertainment / Columbia

1. Omar Apollo

Clap if you're shocked.
