NEVER ENOUGH (Bonus Version) by Daniel Caesar - 8.6

I was so relieved that Never Enough was good because my roommate and I bought tickets to The Intimate Sessions before listening to the album. "Buyer's Remorse," to "Homiesexual" is one of the greatest track runs I've ever heard. It's truly insane. "Toronto 2014" and "Do You Like Me?" are also on constant repeat. The bonus tracks were fine, but I don't know if they were all necessary. Nevertheless, this album was a great project to welcome a new era, and I can't wait for the tour!

Other things I listened to:

  • the record by boygenius

  • Por Vida by Kali Uchis

  • Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) [Deluxe Version] by Kali Uchis

  • playing w/ fire - EP by redveil

  • "4EVA (feat. Pharrell)" by KAYTRAMINÉ, Aminé & KAYTRANADA

  • "Time" by Free Nationals, Mac Miller & Kali Uchis

  • "Losing You" by FLO

  • "WHERE DOES YOUR SPIRIT GO?" by The Kid LAROI

"Princess Diana" by Ice Spice & Nicki Minaj - 8.2

Another great collab! Whoever thought of adding a Nicki feature to this song instead of "In Ha Mood" is a genius because this remix is a HIT. Not to mention, there are SO many quotable lyrics, and Riot ate with the beat.

"Kill Bill (feat. Doja Cat)" by SZA - 7.6

I don't care what anyone else says. Doja Cat's verse is EXCELLENT. Her storytelling ate down and it totally complements the integrity of the song. I just wish she was more involved after her opening verse. She totally could've added another verse or at least sang one of the choruses with SZA.

"Dancing In The Courthouse" by Dominic Fike - 7.6

This is a bit of a different direction for Dominic, and I'm curious as to how the album is going to sound with "DITC" as the lead single. It took a few listens for me to get it, but now that I do, I think it's pretty on par with the rest of his music. Don't get me wrong, it's no "WURLI," but it's cute, and it's a fun song for the summer.

Ends & Begins by Labrinth - 6.6

I LOVED Labrinth's Coachella set, and had his lead single featuring Billie Eilish, "Never Felt So Alone" on repeat all month so, of course, I was excited to hear his new album. The project was solid, but I was a little disappointed by the inconsistency. Half of the songs on the album are hits, while the other half are mediocre. I just don't understand how an album that has "The Feels," isn't a contender for my favourite album of the year.

Jackman. by Jack Harlow - 6.2

I know Jackman was supposed to be Jack Harlow's big redemption moment, but it didn't really do much for me. It was definitely much better than Come Home The Kids Miss You, but this album felt like it was missing something. I know it was supposed to be a more stripped-back album, but it seemed to lack inspiration entirely. Also, the lyrics in some of the tracks, specifically "Common Ground," sounded performative. I know they were coming from a place of genuine observation, but it gave too much J. Cole for my taste (no shade). Ironically, my favourite track was "No Enhancers," the song with the least amount of substance on the album. Jack Harlow has proven on previous records that he can rap, but maybe, catchy and mediocre might just be his pocket.

Highlights

This month's faves

Song of the Month: "Saving All My Love" by Omar Apollo

I tweeted about how this song had the Frank print all over it, and I wouldn't be surprised if his background vocals were secretly featured. Omar tweeted about his disappointment in his fans for letting this song flop, but I think he's the real villain for not releasing an extended version.

Album of the Month: Never Enough by Daniel Caesar

Um, DUH.

Artist of the Month: Daniel Caesar

I feel like this is the obvious choice. Not only was NEVER ENOUGH on repeat at all times of the day but also getting to meet Daniel and see him perform live all in the same day solidified him as Artist of the Month.
