In Theatres

Everything I saw on the big screen this month

Wonka (2023) - 3.5/5 🪩

I've had several people ask me what I thought of Wonka, and I pretty much said the same thing every time. Timothée was excellent, the sets were gorgeous, and I liked the music (unpopular opinion). However, the writing was weak. Especially the twist. Omg. I don't think this counts as a spoiler, but just in case, this is your warning. Having three Black characters in the movie and then the huge reveal being that two of them are related was beyond unserious. Like, please be so for real. My mom and I were not impressed by this. Also, I thought the side characters were majorly underdeveloped. The script definitely could've used another round of editing. Overall, it was a good enough production. It wasn't the best movie musical, but I had fun!

The Sweet East (2023) - 3.5/5 🪩

I had no idea what this film was about going into the theatre, but I saw Ayo Edebiri and Jacob Elordi were starring in it so I was sold. The Sweet East follows Lillian, a high school senior, on a school trip to Washington, D.C. She meets some interesting people and ends up going on an adventure of a lifetime through the cities (and woods) of the East Coast.

The film was definitely something! I don't really know what I was expecting, but as it went on, it became less and less predictable, which I enjoyed. Ayo's performance was fantastic (obviously), but Talia Ryder is truly a star. She looked familiar, so as soon as the credits rolled, I immediately looked her up. Turns out, I saw her in Dumb Money and Do Revenge earlier this year.

Anatomy of a Fall (2023) - 3/5 🪩

Anatomy of a Fall stans, I see you, and I hear you, but I'm sorry, it just didn't do it for me. This would've been excellent if it was 30 minutes shorter. The plot was imaginative, the cinematography was stunning and the performances were STELLAR (especially Milo Machado-Graner), but I was tempted to check the time every five minutes halfway through. If you haven't seen it yet, I would still recommend giving it a watch.

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé (2023) - 5/5 🪩

Of course, I had to see Beyoncé in theatres again. This time, I saw it with Sayak in VIP. I did feel the three hours, but it's still an incredible concert film. Production on 10.
