Outer Banks

The flop season

To be completely honest, I'm not sure if I would've ever started Outer Banks if it wasn't for the pandemic. Don't get me wrong, I love a good treasure hunt, but the first season wasn't anything special. Not to mention the lack of diversity in the cast. If I'm gonna watch a predominately white show, then it's gotta give something and OBX season one did not. Season two, however, did. I ate up the Denmark Tanny cross drama. Especially because it made Pope more of a central focus. Also, it brought us Cleo, who the pogues would've never survived without. After finishing season two, I was more excited than ever to watch season three. Of course, the season I was actually looking forward to had to be the worst one because apparently, I can't have nice things.

Character Ranking:

11. Singh

Self-explanatory.

10. Big John

Singh was crazy, but he was right when he said Big John would rather see the treasure than save John B. I don't care that he sacrificed himself in the end. Big John was still a horrible character. The greed in his eyes when John B gave him that translation from Pope was insane. I know for a fact that if he made it to El Dorado himself, Pope's family wouldn't see a single cent.

9. Ward

Ward is just as bad as Big John. Literally, the only thing that made him more bearable was that he got significantly less screen time. The fact that he would rather donate the cross than give it back to Pope's family didn't sit right with me either.

8. Rafe

I kinda feel bad for Rafe because he literally murdered someone for his dad but still comes second to Sarah, even though she went against the family several times. He's still crazy though, so I don't really see him moving up anytime soon.

7. Topper

Topper is such a loser! How does one get played that many times LOL. I almost felt bad when Sarah lied, but then I remembered I actually didn't care about him. He wasn't ranked this low last season, but Topper stole Rafe's flow by setting the house on fire with the pogues still in it, so he's down here with him.

6. John B

No shade, but John B is such a boring character. I don't even have anything else to say because I didn't care about his storyline at all.

5. Kiara

I didn't really like Kie in the first two seasons, especially after she yelled "murder" at Ward (glad she addressed that, lol). But, she was better this season! I wasn't the biggest fan of the 'her vs. her dad fighting his demons' plotline, but she ate during her time with Rafe in that house.

4. Cleo

I wish I liked Cleo more because she's the only Black girl on the show, but there's just something off about her that I can't put my finger on. She's more than earned her place with the group, but I feel like her character wasn't as fleshed out as it could've been. Also, her quitting the "no love club" or whatever didn't give what it should've.

3. Sarah

If you'd told me last season that Sarah would be in my season three top three, I wouldn't have believed you (TBH, I'm still shocked as I'm writing this). Sure, she had her moments, but I found myself rooting for her more often than not.

2. JJ

JJ has been in my top three since the first episode of the series. There's no other character on the show who would put their life on the line for their friends without hesitation. I'm gonna need the writers to give him a break next season because he's been through TOO much. I almost cried when everyone went home to their families and he was greeted with an eviction notice. Also, as much as I wanted JJ x Pope, I'm not mad about him and Kie.

1. Pope

Even if the writers mainly keep him in the B-plots, Pope is still the best character on the show. Not only is he rational (most of the time), but he's unselfish and compassionate. He may have gone off the rails in season, but he got it together for season three. After last season, I expected him to have more screen time considering that the treasure is still a part of HIS family heirloom, but there's always hope for next season!
