The 95th Academy Awards

So long and for what?

So, The Oscars happened! Jimmy Kimmel hosted again and I found it a bit strange because all this history was made diversity-wise, but they still had the host be a cishet white man. Even so, I was still more invested than in previous years because I actually watched some of the movies nominated in the main categories.

Best Picture

Who I wanted to win: Everything Everywhere All at Once

Who won: Everything Everywhere All at Once

I only watched half of the nominees, but in my honest opinion, The Fablemans probably should've won. However, I wanted EEAAO to win because they deserved the sweep!

Actor in a Leading Role

Who I wanted to win: Austin Butler

Who won: Brendan Fraser

AsToldByKenya said that "the Critic's Choice Awards tell all," and she's right. I was upset about this category because somehow, Austin Butler was able to make me care about a white man who profited off of stealing from Black people. I loved the movie so much that I paid to watch it twice in theatres (I would've gone a third time if I didn't have to work). I'm still on the fence about whether I should bother watching The Whale because from what I heard, Sadie Sink's character is insufferable.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Who I wanted to win: Ke Huy Quan

Who won: Ke Huy Quan

The BAFTAs was a red herring because other than that, Ke Huy Quan had this category on lock throughout awards season. He had such a great performance in the film and the speech he delivered near the end was executed to perfection! I'm so, so, so happy for him and the success of EEAAO!

Actress in a Lead Role

Who I wanted to win: Michelle Yeoh

Who won: Michelle Yeoh

Unfortunately, I never got around to watching Tár, So I'm unsure of which actress had the better performance. However, Michelle was excellent as all of the Evelyns, so I'm glad she got her flowers.

Actress in a Supporting Role

Who I wanted to win: Stephanie Hsu

Who won: Jamie Lee Curtis

I feel like this is self-explanatory.

Animated Feature Film

Who I wanted to win: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Who won: Guillermo Del Torro's Pinocchio

I knew Pinocchio was going to win because it was the only animated film nominated that had a MoMA exhibit. I still haven't watched it, but after seeing the behind-the-scenes visuals, I'm sure it's an excellent film. However, The Last Wish was the only animated film I've ever watched twice in theatres within four months. It was such a great film and I wish it had been nominated last year so it could get the recognition it deserved.

Directing

Who I wanted to win: The Fablemans

Who won: Everything Everywhere All at Once

I really thought the Academy was going to give it to Speilberg for legacy purposes and such, so I was shocked when the Daniels turned out to be the actual winners. I enjoyed the direction of both films, but The Fablemans going home with nothing doesn't quite sit right with me.
