Everything I saw on the big screen this month

The Hunger Games: Ballad of the Songbirds & Snakes (2023) - 4.5/5 🪩

So I knew absolutely nothing about the Hunger Games series before watching this movie. I planned on reading all the books and watching the previous movies before seeing the prequel, but Jack insisted that I see it with him. So, we got last-minute 4DX tickets (we sat in the corner and did NOT get our money's worth). I heard mixed reviews, so I'm genuinely shocked that the movie was as good as it was. The shots alone were amazing, but the performances were EXCELLENT. I now understand the Rachel Zegler agenda, and I'm here for it! Also, Viola Davis is my mother, and Tom Blythe... well, let's just say I kept forgetting I was not supposed to like him.

The Holdovers (2023) - 5/5 🪩

I wanted to see The Holdovers during TIFF, but the showtimes didn't fit into my schedule. I begged my mom to see it with me as soon as it came to theatres, and shortly after, we went to a late screening in the VIP theatre.

I absolutely adore this film. I don't want to say too much about it because I want y'all to get the full experience, but best believe it will be added to my holiday rotation. I don't want to get greedy, but I do think some of the performances should get recognition from The Academy. Also, I was GAGGED when I saw Brick from Insatiable as one of the students. I'm so glad Michael Provost is back on screen!

A Clockwork Orange (1971) - /5 🪩

I had no idea what was going on. The entire thing felt like a fever dream. I might have to read the book for additional context.

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé (2023) - 5/5 🪩

I thought I saw the Renaissance tour back in July. Then I watched the movie. The Toronto curse is REAL, y'all, because as excellent as she was, it was nowhere near the performances she put on in the other cities. Thank goodness she made a film because the Renaissance needs to be experienced by everyone. The first five minutes were an out-of-body experience. I was SO gagged by the editing. Genius. I always knew Beyoncé was a multi-generational talent for a reason, but actually getting to see the work she put into the tour, the film and her career was wickedly eye-opening. That's a legend right there. Beyoncé is truly a once in a lifetime performer.
